- You do need to get all the air out of the long hose that connects the vacuum to the inlet. 
  I find it easiest to attach the hose to the vacuum which has been attached to the pole and lower that into the pool. 
  Then gradually lower in the rest of the hose vertically, periodically shaking it a little to dislodge the air bubbles
  caught in the ribs of the hose. When the entire hose is submerged and most air bubbles are gone, attach the hose
  to the inlet. 
  Do not dunk the hose in
